Plasticity, localization, and damage in ferritic-pearlitic steel studied by nanoscale digital image correlation

چکیده

The evolution of deformation from plasticity to localization damage is investigated in ferritic-pearlitic steel through nanometer-resolution microstructure-correlated SEM-DIC (µ-DIC) strain mapping, enabled highly accurate microstructure-to-strain alignment. We reveal the key mechanisms ferrite and pearlite as well their into relation microstructural arrangement. Notably, two contrasting were identified that control whether initiation occurs and, connection hotspots grains, potentially results macroscale fracture: (i) cracking bridges with relatively clean lamellar structure by brittle fracture cementite lamellae due build-up concentrations nearby ferrite, versus (ii) large without a more “open”, chaotic morphology, which enables plastic percolation paths interlamellar channels. Based on these insights, recommendations for resistant steels are proposed.

On the Use of Acoustic Emission and Digital Image Correlation for Welded Joints Damage Characterization

A series of tests have been conducted to investigate fatigue damage characterization in corroded welded steel plates using structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques. Acoustic Emission (AE) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique with potential applications for locating and monitoring fatigue cracks in service. In the present work, AE is implemented to characterize damage during crack e...

Automatic Detection and Localization of Surface Cracks in Continuously Cast Hot Steel Slabs Using Digital Image Analysis Techniques

Quality inspection is an indispensable part of modern industrial manufacturing. Steel as a major industry requires constant surveillance and supervision through its various stages of production. Continuous casting is a critical step in the steel manufacturing process in which molten steel is solidified into a semi-finished product called slab. Once the slab is released from the casting unit, th...

Strong Ferritic – Steel Welds

There are many steels which are stronger than 2000 MPa, with toughness values exceeding 100 MPa m and which have been in commercial service for many decades. Examples include the marageing alloys and carbide–free bainitic steels. By contrast, welding consumables with a proof strength in excess of 1000 MPa are few and far between. This is because whereas wrought steels can be thermomechanically ...

Theory for Hydrogen Desorption in Ferritic Steel

After a concise review of the analytical models available for the interpretation of thermal desorption rates for hydrogen effusion from steel, a numerical method that incorporates the essence of local equilibrium and detrapping kinetics has been implemented to account for the real complexity of practical experiments. For example, the model permits the treatment of multiple kinds of traps, uses ...
